The group usually consists of between 10-20 students spending one semester at the program. Although most are university undergraduates, graduate and non-traditional students are also welcome. Art majors and non-art majors are usually equally represented in the program.

The program is conducted in English. Beginning art students may apply. Seriousness of purpose and commitment to the program are required.

Students live either in a host family, with two meals per day or in an independently rented studio apartment in town. The IAU administrative staff carefully chooses host families and many have been hosting students for years. Host homes are usually within walking distance of the Marchutz school and many students find the experience of living with a host family extremely positive.

"I don't think they are trying to teach you a single way to paint; they are talking about a way of being."
