Overview
IAU College, in partnership with CEA, is pleased to introduce an intensive summer program in Barcelona, Spain.
Students will earn up to six academic credits (90 contact hours) in Spanish language
and in significant municipal, regional and national matters. They will investigate
the most significant neighborhoods, plazas, architectural achievements and public
art. Lectures and activities will also help students to demystify the city's multi-ethnic
population as the result of numerous occupations, expulsions and migrations. Students
will reside in homestays which encourages immersion into the Spanish language and
culture.

Courses
Interested students can choose to enroll in two of the following courses:
- Spanish 101 (3 credits) - Elementary Spanish I
Conducted in Spanish
Fundamentals of Spanish geared to
facilitate the development of functional proficiency at the novice
levels in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Introduction to Spanish and Latin American culture through readings
and discussion.
- Spanish 102 (3 credits) - Elementary Spanish II
Conducted in Spanish
Spanish 102 is the
continuation of Spanish 101. The goal of this course is to enable
students to acquire basic master of the following four language
skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course will
emphasize practice of grammar and communication skills in the
classroom. Prerequisite: Spanish 101 or the equivalent.
- Spanish 201 (3 credits) - Third Semester Spanish Conducted in
Spanish
The final course of the core language sequence completes the introduction of the
basic structures of the language, with continuing emphasis on communicative proficiency.
Specific focus on culture of Barcelona in art, music and literature. Course will
also include several field trips with practical application of language usage in
real life settings. Prerequisite: Two semesters of Spanish or the equivalent. 10:00am-12:00pm
- Spanish 202 (3 credits) - Fourth Semester Spanish Conducted
in Spanish
A review of the structures of the language, as well as practice in composition and
conversation, in preparation for upper-division work. Specific focus on culture
of Barcelona in art, music and literature. Prerequisite: Three semesters of Spanish
or the equivalent. 10:00am-12:00pm
- Spanish 301 (3 credits) - Advanced Grammar and Composition Conducted
in Spanish
Review and mastery of Spanish grammar, with special emphasis on
syntactic structures and stylistics. Prerequisite: Four semesters of
Spanish or equivalent.12:30-2:30pm
- Spanish 302 (3 credits) - Advanced Grammar and Conversation
Conducted in Spanish
Review and mastery of Spanish grammar along with intensive
interaction to develop proficiency in listening comprehension and
speaking ability. Prerequisite: Three semester of Spanish or the
equivalent.10:00am-12:00pm
- Spanish 395 (3 credits) - Special Topics: History of the Spanish Language
Conducted in Spanish
This course will provide an overview of the historical, social and cultural processes
that have shaped the Spanish language since the arrival of Latin in Spain. Attention
will be paid to changes in the sound and grammatical systems of the language, the
dialectal diversity of the language throughout the Spanish speaking world, and the
consequences of contact between Spanish and other languages, such as Spanish and
Arabic in medieval Spain, Spanish and Catalan in Catalonia, or Spanish and English
in the U.S. This course brings together historical linguistic and cultural history.
Prerequisite: Five semesters of Spanish or the equivalent. 12:30-2:30pm
- Film/Spanish 300 (3 credits) - Spanish Cinema
Study of the development of a distinctly Spanish mode of
filmmaking that has found global success via artists who play off
and against the predominance of Hollywood. Students will develop the
tools with which to speak about the cinematic medium and the way it
frames contemporary concerns of the mundane and the metaphysical.
Prerequisites: Four semesters of Spanish required for Spanish
credit.
Accommodations & Facilities
Courses will be held in the center of the city at the CEA College Center for Spanish
Language and Culture in Plaza Cataluña. The center includes modern classrooms with
Wi-Fi, a staff of academic and student affairs professionals.
Students will be housed in shared homestays. Breakfast and dinner will be included
as part of the homestay accommodation. Students will be placed together and may
request roommates on the housing application form.

Program Activities and Cost
Total Cost: $4,675: Program costs include six units of course credit,
housing, most meals, cultural activities, insurance and an airport pick-up in Barcelona.
Participants will engage in daily classes and two weekend excursions to Girona and
Tarragona, leaving two weekends open to optional activities or enjoying the vast
array of possibilities the city has to offer. Students meet daily with teachers,
local artists and scholars and participate in study tours to the following sites:
