Resources for Parents

Dear Parents:

We are very pleased that your child has chosen to attend the Institute for American Universities. You can expect this to constitute one of the most profound learning experiences that any student could ever have--that of living, studying, working and learning in a foreign environment. For us at the Institute, that means France, whose world-renowned culture and showcase position in an economic Europe provide a solid, stimulating, relevant background for personal growth and intellectual discovery.

Education abroad for Americans has always been a good idea. Today, global interdependence in politics, economics, business and culture renders traditional geographic boundaries obsolete. To thrive effectively in this increasingly international environment, American students need the experience of living and working in other cultures in other countries.

All students grow from this experience. Many are transformed by it. No college curriculum in the United States can replicate the impact on a student of not just surviving, but actually flourishing in a foreign environment. This transformation involves resilience, maturity, confidence and wisdom, opening up new personal, cultural and professional vistas.

We encourage you to participate in your child’s preparations for departure and to discuss expectations and responsibilities inherent in spending a term abroad. At the Institute for American Universities, we do look closely after the welfare and needs of each student. But we do not forget that each student is also a responsible adult and a maturing citizen of the world.

Thank you for helping your child come to France, for helping to make this unforgettable experience possible. Feel free to check out the links below for additional information. And we would be pleased if you would visit us if you are ever in Aix-en-Provence or Avignon. You are our 52nd class of parents!

Cordially,

Kurt Schick, Director of Enrollment
