Dean of Admissions
& Alumni Affairs
Kurt Schick, IAU's Dean of Admissions and Alumni Affairs, began his career at IAU in 2001. He previously served as Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Concordia University (River Forest, IL) and initially honed his recruitment skills as an admissions counselor at his alma mater, Augustana College, in Rock Island, IL. He received his B.A. in English/French from Augustana in 1990 and obtained his M.S. in Organization Leadership from Regis University in 2016.
Since he began at IAU, Kurt has overseen IAU's Admissions operations, focusing on developing new institutional partnerships and enhancing existing ones. Under Kurt's leadership, the admissions office has grown from a two-person office to a staff of nine. With IAU's expansion into Spain, the inclusion of multi-country January term programs, the addition of faculty-led programming, and the options of degree programs, enrollment at IAU has gone from 300 per year to more than 1,000 students.
In 2016, Kurt took on the role of Dean of Alumni Affairs, leveraging the robust network of over 20,000 alumni with the goal of increasing IAU's endowment and scholarship opportunities for future students. Hosting regional alumni receptions and follow-up from IAU's incredibly successful 60th anniversary celebration and alumni reunion - held in May, 2017 at IAU's Aix-en-Provence, France campus - have proven to be successful strategies.
Rebecca Coyle, a 2005 Alumna of IAU, has been the Associate Director since August of 2012. She oversees IAU's January term programs and customized programs, coordinating their budgets, itineraries, and logistics. Prior to coming to IAU, she served as a Study Abroad Program Coordinator at USD for five years, advising for programs in Latin America, Spain, and France. Rebecca has a B.A. in Spanish and International Relations (Minor in French), and an MBA in International Business and Management from the University of San Diego. She speaks Spanish and French.
Sarah Maharjan has been IAU’s Associate Director for University Relations and Communications since August 2017 and has been with IAU since August 2014. Sarah handles institutional relations and admissions, coordinates scholarships and resident fellow programs, and manages IAU websites and databases. Sarah has an interest in language acquisition and French literature. She earned a B.A. in French Language and Literature from Skidmore College and an M.A. in French Didactics and Pedagogy from Middlebury College. She speaks French.
Alicia Freter has been at IAU since August 2014 and began as the Assistant Director of Admissions and Alumni Affairs in December 2016. She coordinates custom and faculty-led programs, J-terms, and the Barcelona program. She provides admissions oversight and U.S. office management. Ali has a B.A. in Spanish (Minor in French) from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and an M.A. in Education and Human Development – International Education from George Washington University. She speaks Spanish and French.
Chief Financial Officer
Judy Barral, a 1972 alumna of IAU, became the Chief Financial Officer in August 2014. Previously she served as Director of the Mason Enterprise Center, a small business incubator at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, from 2004 to 2014. She held business development and administrative positions at several French companies over a thirty year career, including Arianespace, Leclerc and the Westar Group, all based in Washington, DC. She has a BA in French from the University of Maryland, and a Business degree from IPC Vins in Bordeaux France. Judy is fluent in French, and speaks Spanish, with some notions of Italian, German, and Amharic.
Coordinator of Admissions
Arianna has been the IAU Coordinator of Admissions since June 2015. She advises short-term, custom program, and third-party provider students, and handles the IAU Alumni Ambassador Program as well as IAU social media channels. Arianna has dual degrees in Psychology and Human Development Family Studies from Colorado State University. She speaks French.

Rose Guth is an IAU and Marchutz alumna and began her work with IAU in November 2015 as an Enrollment Counselor. Rose began as the Coordinator of IAU Admissions and Alumni Affairs in November 2016 and continues her work with alumni and degree student enrollment in this role. Rose develops the masters and bachelor’s programs in Aix-en-Provence while directing outreach to over 20,000 alumni. Rose has a B.A. in Art History and French from the University of San Diego. She speaks French.
Jude Caywood has been at IAU since August 2015. She began as a student in the internship program and has been the Admissions Assistant since August 2017. She assists students with the application and pre-departure processes, in addition to supporting the Admissions and Alumni Affairs staff. Jude holds a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Humanities (Minors in French and Women's and Gender Studies) from the University of San Diego. She speaks French.
Kate House served as the Coordinator of the U.S. Office from 2011-2014 and transitioned to the East Coast Admissions Coordinator in early 2017. She's a Marchutz School of Fine Arts 2009 alumna and graduated with her B.A. in Fine Arts (Minor in Art History) from Gettysburg College. She speaks some French.
Mary Claire Gustafson
Mary Claire Gustafson is a 2012 IAU alumna, and upon her return from Aix-en-Provence she held a summer internship in IAU's U.S. Office. She returned to IAU as the Midwest Admissions Coordinator in the summer of 2017. After graduating with her B.A. in Anthropology (Minor in Communications) from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, she joined Teach for America and taught high school English for four years in Kansas City, MO. Mary Claire holds an M.A. in Special Education from University of Missouri, St. Louis. She speaks some French and Spanish.
Kirstin Havice began in July 2017 as the Admissions Assistant for The American College of the Mediterranean (ACM), a wholly-owned subsidiary of IAU, offering bachelor's and master's degrees at its campus in Aix-en-Provence. She supports current and incoming students with application materials and pre-departure advising, and promotes the future growth and development of degree programs through assistance with research, marketing, recruitment and licensure/accreditation efforts. Previously she worked with CEA as a Site Specialist, assisting students with courses, housing, visas and all pre-departure related items for programs in England, Ireland, Australia, Italy, Germany and Russia. In 2010, she moved into the role of University Advisor, prospecting and assisting new university partnerships and custom programs. In 2011, she left international education to take a primary role in Havice Design, a firm providing creative direction, brand development and graphic design services that she and her husband began in 2008, holding the roles of business manager and writer. She is a graduate of the University of Arizona, with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies, including journalism, media arts and studio art (graphic design and photography). She studied abroad at University College Cork in Ireland and in 2003, spent a year working in New Zealand as well as traveling to Australia and Thailand. She is currently learning French.
