Professional Workshop for Teachers of French
IAU College is pleased to announce its Professional Workshop designed for teachers of French and French culture seeking to improve their knowledge of contemporary written and oral French and of contemporary French culture while sharing and renewing their teaching strategies. Interested U.S. Faculty may complete the IAU Professional Workshop Application.
Classes will be enhanced by pedagogical research sessions in the afternoon and by a program of cultural outings : visits, exhibitions, shows that will offer teachers the opportunity to steep themselves in the rich artistic and cultural life of the region during the summer.
Program Dates & Sessions
The Workshop will consist of one session divided into two complementary parts, one from July 6 - 16 and one from July 17-27, 2013. If desired, participants may choose to participate only the first part: Linguistics and Languages.
Part I: July 6-16: LINGUISTICS & LANGUAGES
This part of the workshop provides an analytical and pragmatic approach to the components of the French language including:
- a) Linguistics, basis of language acquisition, and Structural Approaches to the complex sentence
- b) Oral Production : Phonetics and Methodology
- + pedagogical sessions : Spoken French/Writing/Theater.
Part II: July 17-27: CONTEMPORARY CULTURE & SOCIETY
The latter part of the workshop will focus on contemporary culture and society in France and in francophone contexts including:
- a) Faces of Contemporary France : from the birth of the republican tradition in France to today’s notion of « identité française »
- b) Women’s Position in Society as represented in film and Francophone Literature : dynamics of oppression, of liberation, and attainment of identity
- + pedagogical sessions : Comparison of societies/ Contemporary Arts/Film
IAU College certificate will be awarded at the end of the 2 sessions to all participants having successfully completed the series of workshops. The certificate can be recognized for university credits; verify with your home institution.
Program Dates & Fees
If desired, participants may choose to participate in only the first session: Linguistics and Languages from 6 – 16 July, 2013.

Program fees include tuition, housing, continental breakfast every day and six dinners per week, activity fee, orientation, health, liability and repatriation insurance, excursions, and scheduled cultural activities.
Additional student costs include round trip airfare, lunches, and personal expenses.
